From the recording Honesty and Chocolate
an unfinished piece that I'd had for several years, written originally on one chord, as an exercise in improvising melody and lyric. The ending came at home the evening after we'd recorded what I'd thought would be the entire song!
Lyrics
A river runs between us, keeping us apart
It flows between the banks of pride
To bind our broken hearts
It flourishes where'er it goes upon the hopes we share
It holds us at a distance while neither of us dares
To summon up the courage
To put away the past
To make our love the future
A future that will last
To recognise our moment
To seize the coming day
To find a ford across the stream
And live it come what may
A river runs between us, running both our lives
We watch it from our lonely sides
Where neither of us thrives
And what we long for most of all, a dream we long to share
A miracle to dash our fears while neither of us dares
To summon up the courage
To put away the past
To make our love the future
A future that will last
To recognise our moment
To seize the coming day
To find a ford across the stream
And live it come what may
A river runs between us, keeping us apart
It flows between the banks of pride
To bind our broken hearts
A river runs between us, keeping us apart…
